Motor City Mitten Madness

Motor City Mitten Madness

Since 1993, the Wings collect new winter gear (mittens, coats, scarves, hats, etc.) and monetary donations from fans at select home games every November. The items are then distributed to local homeless shelters, including but not limited to the Coalition on Temporary Shelter and Detroit Rescue Mission.

According to the Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness, there were over 92,000 homeless individuals living in the state of Michigan in 2013. The donated winter gear will help to ward off frostbite among the homeless population during Michigan’s freezing winters.

2014-15 Season

The Red Wings hosted their annual Motor City Mitten Madness Night on Nov. 26 at Joe Louis Arena to collect donations for the Coalition on Temporary Shelter (COTS) in Detroit. Fans brought 405 pieces of new or gently-used winter clothing and made $268 in donations for the Detroit shelter. The first 20 fans who made a monetary or clothing donation received a hockey puck autographed by a member of the 2014-15 Red Wings team.
